a birthday poem for ben: based on a true story
POEM REMOVED FOR EDITING.
It has been raining here for a week. And not just a drizzle. Dark, low clouds. Downpour. Downpour. Downpour. Yesterday, Ben (who turned 11 today) said he wanted the sun to come out for his birthday. And it did. There isn’t a cloud in the sky. The sun is big and bright.
This morning at breakfast, I tried to convince him I had arranged it, that I was the reason the sun came out today for him. (He knew I was full of it, of course, and when he refused to believe me, I pulled the mommy card and told him he better say, “Thank you, Mommy, for giving birth to me so I could see the sun.”)
The first part of that conversation inspired this poem, which started as something else entirely. Today, the muse gave me this instead, demanded that I be sweet. Don’t tell anyone that I succumbed.
I don’t usually share with them my poems. But I think I’ll give him this one.
